Satellite Footprint Capture Tool for HBU Analysis
Overview
Built a browser tool that captures building and lot footprints from satellite imagery by search or click, classifies them and exports one GeoJSON collection for a Tijuana highest-and-best-use dashboard.
Highlights
- 01
Replaced vertex-by-vertex polygon drawing with a search-or-click loop that pulls Google outlines, ML-derived Google Open Buildings footprints or OpenStreetMap footprints, degrading gracefully to manual drawing.
- 02
Wrote a DuckDB extractor that downloads only a city bounding box from the public Open Buildings bucket (79,746 Tijuana footprints at confidence ≥ 0.75 and ≥ 150 m²) instead of the full 178 GB dataset.
- 03
Defined a GeoJSON contract with typed plaza metadata and a single axis-order conversion module, and served the Maps API key from a local server rather than embedding it in the HTML.
